Unfortunately, the role of "world's leading digital PC game distributor" is already occupied, by Valve Software and its Steam service. As of October 2010, Valve's Steam service had 30 million subscribers. As of October 2011, EA had 6 million downloads of Origin.

When EA's Crysis 2 was removed from the Steam store in July, DeMartini's response was fairly unequivocal:

Unfortunately, if we're not allowed to manage this experience directly and establish a relationship with you, it disrupts our ability to provide the support you expect and deserve. At present, there is only one download service that will not allow this relationship. This is not our choice, and unfortunately it is their customer base that is most impacted by this decision. We are working diligently to find a mutually agreeable solution.

'Battlefield 3' remains absent from Steam, and every day it remains absent hurts both Valve and EA – but Valve is not in an impending sales-off with Activision's 'Modern Warfare 3′. EA is.
