Today we're opening up the beta of the Portal 2 Authoring Tools to everyone! It's available as a free download for all owners of the PC version of Portal 2 and can be found under the "Tools" tab in Steam.

The Portal 2 Authoring Tools include versions of the same tools we used to make Portal 2. They'll allow you to create your own singleplayer and co-op maps, new character skins, 3D models, sound effects, and music.

Here's what's included:
- Updated version of Hammer, the Source level editor
- Updated Faceposer
- Example maps and instances to help build new maps
- Updated suite of command-line compiling utilities

If you want to get started on the beta, we suggest joining two mailing lists:
Portal 2 List
General Source List

This is beta software, so if you have any problems or issues, please send them to the p2mapper email list.

Get out there and show us what devious puzzles you've all been brainstorming!

Free for all PC owners of Portal 2. http://www.thinkwithportals.com/blog.php?id=5443

The idea of making my own Portal 2 maps filled me with glee and my first thought was, "This is why Valve is awesome." Then it occurred to me that 10, 15 years ago, this was the standard. It's not that Valve has gotten better than any other video game companies, they just haven't devolved.

Good to see Valve still values it's mapping community.

That is one thing I like from Valve. They get involved with the community a lot. That is how Alien Swarm was created. By a group of community members, other than Valve, who can make good mods. I wish EA would do that and we would have better game maps.

And to top it off, Alien Swarm is free: http://store.steampowered.com/app/630/?snr=1_4_4__13

Alien Swarm is a game and Source SDK release from a group of talented designers at Valve who were hired from the Mod community. Available free of charge, the game thrusts players into an epic bug hunt featuring a unique blend of co-op play and squad-level tactics.

P.S. Sorry for going off-topic. :)

Pen @ FPS posted this news about Portal. Thought it would be worth adding to the portal2 thread. Check your Steam library, and download it from there.

Portal 2 DLC out Wednesday, adds new co-op missions, challenge mode and leaderboards

Posted Image

Wednesday October 5. That will be the day in which the Portal 2 Peer Review DLC will be released. The free mission pack will extend Atlas and Peabody's co-op adventure and add a new challenge mode for single player and co-op maps.

Back when Valve announced first DLC pack, they also mentioned leaderboards so all your friends and a bunch of strangers will all know how exactly how smart you are (or aren't), which explains the 'Peer Review' handle. That means your performance will be graded by both Glados AND the conglomerate hivemind of the The Internet. NO PRESSURE.

In more 'free stuff from Valve' news, the third volume of the Portal 2 soundtrack, Songs to Test By, is available now on the Portal 2 site, featuring such classic hits as Some Assembly Required, Your Precious Moon and Robots FTW.
