What device or setup will stop people from tapping into my IP? Can my IP # be extracted from signing up @ various clans home page (forums) and be used that way as well? I have noticed that some forums actually display your IP address in public. Others allow admins to know what your IP # is and I am just wondering if this should be a concern.

Reason being is that under a profile I use to test BASIC CVARS, that profile was popping up on 'gametracker' and, along with the servers I actually DO visit there were various servers/games I have never seen (nor played) popping up beside my name. WTF????

What are your views on this situation and what precautions can I take to avoid this matter? I see this act as a cyber-crime because my IP has NOTHING to do with the outside world unless you are doing bad things to get your IP # banned but, beyond that, an IP address is private property being paid for by ME and anyone tapping into that is no better that a cyber crook and deserves to be put in jail. It's STEALING!

PS: My profile name used was 'Benny Lava' and not dP:Centrifuge!

Thanks,
-dP:Centrifuge!

we do not ban by IP so I wouldn't worry about it. Plus IP spoofing is near impossible..

Wake up bro. IP's are not private property. Yeah sure the EU can pass new laws stating IP's are private info. But the INTERNET is world wide. Join any game server. The admin and his crew have your IP. Join any website, use any search engine. You get the picture. Further more, they will never be private. IP logging is like having a security camera on your game server, website, E-Commerce store. You can find out who is there to buy and who is trying to steal. Your kidding yourself if you think you can keep your IP, or IP's private. Its not going to happen.

There is ip spoofing software out there. Basically all you need to do is change the headers in the packets being sent and you got yourself a spoofed ip. Like Ice_man said we do not ban by IP.

Surf with a proxy to the clansites you suspect of looting your ip.

Are you sure your IP is static. Most providers give out a static-dynamic IP, which changes when your modem gets offline for a period longer than the DHCP-lease time.

It's not stealing unless you gotta pay more money if your connection generated too much traffic. As for private property: Do you pay for your static IP or not? Because if it's unpaid for and static dynamic, you can't call it property.

btw: Your IP has all to do with the outside world. It's like your house address, but it's not a street, but a number for a computernetwork called internet.

If your IP gets spoofed, it's like someone sending a letter, with your address as a sender on it. Most of the time you won't notice, unless you get into trouble for it. I know this is quite black&white, but you shouldn't have to worry since here they don't ban IP's and if you surf through a proxy it's quite hard to be banned on a site too.

By spoofing your IP, they don't tap into your network.

Some tips:
- get yourself a real static IP (in the Netherlands they cost about 25€ / month), they can still be spoofed, but then you got a lot more ground if you want to take action against someone spoofing your IP.
- surf the internet (especially clansites) with an anonymous proxy, or Torpark.
- secure your own network
- even if you have only 1 computer, get a good router as a hardware firewall
