Ubisoft has announced plan to launch a new PC exclusive game in a well known franchise. The game is Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online, a free-to-play online third person tactical shooter title. The game, developed by Ubisoft's Singapore development studio, has already launched its official web site and it is taking sign ups for its upcoming closed beta test. Ubisoft said the beta test should begin sometime this summer. Ghost Recon Online will allow players to choose from three different player classes with ways to customize weapons and more. Ubisoft claims that the game will have maps and graphics that "will rival the quality of those traditionally seen only in retail games." Players will be able to play Ghost Recon Online completely for free but the game will give players the option to purchase "premium items" as well. The game will also have "a rich lobby platform for hosting social and persistent progression features." Ubisoft plans to hold regular events online including content updates and "customized content based on community feedback". You can check out a trailer for the game below.

While this is Ubisoft's first free-to-play shooter title the publisher has dipped its hand in free-to-play games before. It launched a web based free fantasy MMO. Might and Magic Heroes Kingdom, in 2009. Ubisoft is still working on Ghost Recon Future Soldier, a retail first person tactical shooter for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms that was officially announced in 2010. Originally announced as due for release in the fall of 2010, Ubisoft has now set a first quarter 2012 release date for that game.

Could be interesting.

The original Ghost Recon was my first onlinf FPS and I still have the disks around here somwhere.

Had some great mods to go with it as well...wonder if this will do as good

Looks... generic. I don't get what its hook is.

Original Ghost Recon & expansions were amazing games that were killed by "ghost warrior" or whatever it is that they put out.

lol..Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare is what your thinking off..

While it didn't turn out as popluar as they wanted(although they did launch a G.R.A.W 2), it did seem to be a precursor to Frointline:Fuel of War (with its little gadget weapons) which, from what I've heard, was really popular.

This doesn't mean there will be one, this also doesn't mean there won't be any. The fact is just that we're highly considering it and we've placed it in our future plans.

For now, we're focusing more on stabilizing the build and implementing tweaks that should give an awesome Free to Play shooter experience once GRO becomes available to everyone.

Rest assured that if something definite about dedicated servers would come up, we'll inform you.

It's not too bad actually. Been playing a bit for the last two nights. It seems to be more of a PC game for sure. Just simple things like in game VOIP, text chat in the lobby, in game and at the end of the round, detailed end round scoreboard etc. It was funny, the first 5 minutes I played I heard people on VOIP talking about strats for the map etc. It was refreshing to see.

Short videos of mine:

Funny part is you have to buy nades with credits. Should help reduce nade spammers :)
