IW's own FourZeroTwo has commented that Modern Warfare 2 will not have dedicated servers or PunkBuster.

* We're doing a lot on the backend to make the game accessible for everyone.

* There is no delay for the PC version of MW2

* There's prestige mode

* Jason West at the MP event, said that he was dead on, on the matchmaking servers. We've been building a system on the backend called IW.NET.

* You are completely reliant on IW.NET. There are no server lists. There are no dedicated servers.

* You have private matches where you can customize the game

* You cannot put MW2 on a dedicated server.

* This is the first time we've ever done something like this and the team has huge plans for what IW.NET develops into.

* Customizing your game...you have quite a few options in a private match

* You're getting same game (as in Console), plus matchmaking and private match.

* Server admin point-of view, NO DEDICATED SERVERS

* Anti-Cheat will be VAC, not PunkBuster

Update 1 Midnight Oct 15 '09

Aside from the interesting Steam-related news, the latest I have heard related to dedicated servers was a comment from a GSP (anonymous source as he wanted anonymity) that dedicated servers will in fact be available. Apparently, he was contacted by IW on this topic recently.

Given that GSP's love the Steam interface...could we in fact be heading for an online Steam+dedi server scenario?

Heard this earlier today: MW2 will not have Dedicated Support, Will have VAC not PB!, and will use Steam for match making. From Fourzerotwo (IW Community Manager) on Bash and Slash this morning!

To recap

- No dedicated servers

- Only listening, in which you have to use IW-net + steam (not sure how that works)

- Must have graphics card and a lic of the game for each server or each rented customer.

- VAC via steam for AC

- Private servers can be customized by turning features on and off and will be hosted on your own connection

- public serves will be hosted via IW-net

- no mods or custom maps as of right now. - no idea when and if MOD tools are released.

This has to be one of the largest mistakes that IW has made. I can understand what they are trying to head toward but what they should have done was incorporate both the IW-net and dedicated server option. Instead they chose to keep this under wraps and destroy the hopes of the PC gaming community in one fell swope!!! Real bright idea folks....just lost my choice to purchase and play your game!

correct

i was already ticked about the game being $60.00

no way i am buying it if it doesn't support my community

made that mistake with L4D...what a joke having a L4D server was

getting vote-kicked off our own server and having no recourse

After reading this, I am disturbed at the choice IW has made to incorporate VAC, instead of PB, into MW2. And for them to not support the dedicated option will likely make this title fail in the coming weeks. Upon listening to the interview with FourZeroTwo, my heart skipped a beat. I guess I will not be buying MW2 and moving on to BF1943 instead.

IW has made a huge mistake for all PC gamers and they will soon realize this when the game hits the shelves. This is the ultimate betrayal, in my opinion. Maybe MW3 will have dedicated support and PB when they realize this failure. The only people who are happy is the cheaters, because VAC is not updated as mush as PB is.

I edited the bash and slash recording and here is the part where the IW community manager 402 broke the news:

Runs about 49 minutes and the news was dropped within the first 10 minutes.
